Carhartt: not just for farm kids

A hand firing up a motorcycle, you see the chrome gleam and hear the rumble of the engines. The riders button and zip up coal black Carhartts,. One pounds his fists to get his gloves on tight, a close up of another’s mouth taking a puff of the cigarette he lit . It’s a video of Hank Williams III, known as an outlaw, son and grandson of country legends, singing in New York City, “3 Shades of Black”. Balenciaga Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012

Muted colors, bright hues, matte solids, wild prints, long skirts, and short shorts were all the order of the day at Balenciaga yesterday morning. Creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has never been one to steer towards easy clothes, and next season will be no exception.

Between his bizarre wide-brimmed hats and satin-pocketed jackets, Balenciaga offers a range of challenging options to its hardest of core fans.

However, Ghesquière also had a few ideas that could be made more wearable come next spring. High-waisted shorts are here to stay, but this time they’ll puff up and outward, loose against the thigh, and they’ll hit the legs high enough to be considered a short-brief hybrid.

Paired with just a simple colored tee, they’d look great when complemented with some leg-lengthening heels for the ultimate modern pin-up look.

Crazy bright colors and prints not your style? Other designers have shown collections fully saturated in reds and oranges and purples, but Balenciaga shows there’s a way to wear even tan and black in the early months next year.

Golds and creams and khakis look great on many skin tones and hair colors, but when they’re accessorized with a pop of next season’s most important palettes of lavenders and marigolds, neutral-colored clothes show they’re both timeless and trendsetting.
